Tony Wheale, Food Safety Expert

Tony is the leading food safety consultant who has more than 30 years professional experience working in public and environmental health services in the UK, and in EU-funded technical assistance projects specialising in EU legal approximation and harmonisation processes in pre-accession, candidate, and European Neighbourhood countries.

Born in London, England in 1954, Tony Wheale was educated at the Stationers' Company's School in North London, then went on to study Public and Environmental Health at Tottenham College of Technology where he gained a Diploma in Environmental Health in 1973. In 1991 he qualified as a lead auditor of quality assurance systems.

He has worked at local and national levels in the UK, and with Government and Food Safety Agencies, including periods working with Ministries of Health and Agriculture, and with the Food Standards Agency in England, Scotland and Wales. He also has extensive experience in drafting new legislation and reviewing existing food safety, standards and organic production legislation, and in assisting with the transposition of EU Regulations and Directives into the national legislation of third countries. Tony is experienced in giving policy advice both within the official control service in the UK and to state services in Eastern Europe, the Mediterranean and Middle East regions with EU-funded technical assistance projects in MEDA, CARDS, TACIS and IPA programmes.
